For Kelowna and Okanagan Families: A Place to Gather Every Memory

There's something particular about grief in the Okanagan.

This valley pulls people in from everywhere — from the Lower Mainland, from the prairies, from across the country. People come here for the sun, the lake, the slower pace, and they stay for decades. They build lives, raise children, grow old. And when someone in those lives is lost, the people who loved them are scattered: some still in Kelowna, some in Penticton or Oliver or Vernon, some in Vancouver or Calgary or further still.

I know this because I'm one of those people. I came to the Okanagan and I stayed. And when I lost my son at twenty years old, I felt the particular grief of this place — the way the people who loved him were spread out, each one carrying memories I didn't have, stories I hadn't heard. I didn't know how to reach them all. I didn't know how to gather what they held.

That's why I built Afterwords. And it's why I built it here, in Kelowna.

What Afterwords is -

Afterwords is a private memorial platform that gives every person who loved someone a place to share what they remember.

When you create a memorial for someone you've lost, you get a private page — their name, their photograph, something of who they were. You invite the people who knew them: family, friends, old colleagues, neighbours, anyone carrying a piece of them. Those people share a story, upload a photograph, or record a voice story that's transcribed automatically.

Everything lives in one private place. Only the people you invite can see it. Nothing goes public. And a QR code lets guests at the service contribute on the day, right from their phone — so the stories shared in the moments after a memorial don't disappear when people leave.

For Okanagan families specifically-

The Okanagan is a long valley. Kelowna is its centre, but the community stretches from Osoyoos to Sicamous, and the people in it have connections that crisscross the whole region and reach far beyond it.

When someone is lost in Kelowna, the people who show up at the service aren't the only ones who loved them. There are friends from childhood now living in other cities. Former colleagues. Cousins. The neighbour who became like family. Not all of them can make it to the Okanagan. Not all of them know what to do with the grief they're carrying.

Afterwords gives those people somewhere to put it.

The family in Kelowna creates the memorial. The friend in Toronto gets an invitation link. The former colleague in Calgary uploads the photo they've held for twenty years. The childhood friend from Penticton shares the story only she knows. All of it comes back to the family. All of it is preserved.

For those planning a service in the Okanagan-

The weeks around a loss are full. You're managing arrangements, notifying people, trying to get through each day. The last thing you need is another complicated task. Afterwords is designed to be set up in minutes. You enter your loved one's name and a few details. You upload a photograph. You copy the link or print the QR code. That's it — the memorial is live.

The QR code can be placed on tables at the reception, tucked into the order of service, or displayed on a stand at the entrance to the service. Guests scan it when they're ready. They share what they remember. The family reviews and keeps what matters. If you're working with a local funeral home, ask whether they offer this service to their families. A note about cost-

A memorial on Afterwords costs $99 for six months. There are renewal options after that for families who want to keep the page active longer.
